Media files uploaded to Ancestry® must be 15 MB or smaller. The following file types are supported:
- Photos: .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .tiff, .bmp, .jif, .tif
- Documents: .doc, .docx, .rtf, .pdf, .txt
If you add or upload files to a public tree that you later make private or delete, your files may continue to exist publicly or privately on the family trees of people who saved them to their trees while your tree was public.
Adding images to people
- Open a tree in the Ancestry app.
- Go to the profile page of someone you want to add photos to. (Select a person > View Profile.)
- Tap the Camera icon (or the gallery if your gallery is empty) and choose Scan photos, Take photo, or Camera roll.
Scan photos: Tap and hold the round shutter button for 3 seconds > Done > if prompted, make adjustments, then tap Next > if prompted, add details and a description, then tap Add.
Take photo: Tap the round shutter button > choose Retake/Retry or Use Photo/OK > if prompted, make adjustments, then tap Next > if prompted, add details and a description, then tap Add.
Camera roll: Select the photo(s) you want to add > tap Add/Done > if prompted, make adjustments, then tap Next > if prompted, add details and a description, then tap Add.
Adding, changing, or removing profile photos
- Open a tree in the Ancestry app.
- Go to the profile page of someone you want to add a profile image to or whose photo you want to change or remove. (Select a person > View Profile.)
- Tap the pencil icon (on the image to the left of their name), choose what you want to do:
- View profile image
- Resize profile image
- Take photo
- Camera roll (iOS) / Upload from device (android)
- Choose from person’s gallery (iOS) / Select from gallery (android)
- Remove as Profile Image
- Follow the on-screen steps to finish.
Adding images to facts
You can add images of records and sources to facts about people in your tree.
- Open a tree in the Ancestry app.
- Go to the person’s profile you want to add records images to. (Select a person > View Profile.)
- Select the LifeStory tab.
- If the fact you want to add an image to is already listed, skip to step 7. Otherwise, select the plus sign + in a green circle.
- Select Type, then choose a fact.
- Enter any information you have, leaving what you don't know blank, and then select Add (iOS) or Save (android).
- Find the fact you want to add an image to and tap Add photo.
- Choose how you want to add a photo:
- Scan photos
- Take photo
- Camera roll (iOS) / Upload from device (android)
- Choose from person’s gallery (iOS) / Select from gallery (android)
- Follow the on-screen steps to finish.
Deleting images
- Open a tree in the Ancestry app.
- Go to the profile page of someone with an image you want to remove. (Select a person > View Profile.)
- Tap View all (top right of the gallery.)
- Tap Select and choose the photo(s) or document(s) to delete.
- Tap the trash can icon and confirm your selection by choosing Delete (iOS) or Delete media > Delete (android).
