AncestryDNA results include your ancestral origins (regions and journeys), DNA matches, and some traits. These results are a good starting point for more family history research, and they can help you to dig deeper into research you’ve already done.
The science
AncestryDNA uses microarray-based autosomal DNA testing. With a simple saliva sample, we survey your entire genome at over 700,000 locations. Then, we compare the data from your 700,000 markers to population data from more than 2,600 global regions.
Autosomal DNA tests survey DNA inherited from autosomal chromosomes. Autosomal testing can find family members across all lines in your family tree. That means that you may find relatives beyond direct ancestors—like siblings, cousins, and other folks you're related to (but don't descend from). People of any gender can receive the same kinds of results.
AncestryDNA® is
- comprehensive. Unlike Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA tests, AncestryDNA provides matches on both sides of your family. A Y-chromosome DNA test finds only the father-to-son path in a family tree, and a mitochondrial DNA test finds only the mother-to-child path.
- gender-neutral. People of any gender can take our test, and everyone is tested for the same number of markers and provided with the same level of detail in test results. Autosomal DNA tests survey DNA inherited from autosomal chromosomes, which are chromosomes that don't determine one's sex assigned at birth. Everyone carries the DNA we test, so AncestryDNA is equally effective for people of any gender.

When to expect the results
In most cases, you'll receive test results within 6 weeks of the date we receive your DNA sample.
When your results are ready, you'll receive an email with a link to your results.
