You can compare your ancestral origins (regions and journeys) and traits with anyone who:
You can compare DNA results with up to 10 people at a time. To compare with someone who isn’t a match, ask them to share their DNA test with you.
Comparing DNA results
To compare DNA results with others, you and the people you’re comparing with must have matches turned on (even if they’re not one of your matches) and allow comparisons.
From a browser
- From any Ancestry® page, click the DNA tab and select Compare.
- Under DNA compare, choose what you want to compare: Regions, Journeys, or Traits.
From the app (limited to Traits only)
- Tap DNA in the bottom right corner.
- Select All traits from the top menu.
- Tap Compare to view your trait comparison.
Adding and removing people from DNA compare
When you first use DNA compare, your results will automatically be compared with 2 of your closest matches. You can add up to 10 total people and remove them at any time.
Adding someone
From a browser:
- Next to the people you’re comparing, click + Add someone.
- In the opened panel, check the box next to anyone you want to add (up to 10 total).
- To find someone, search for their name or username.
- If their test is managed by someone else, search for the manager’s name or username.
- To compare with someone who isn’t a match, select Invite, enter their email or username, and click Invite to share to send the invitation. Once accepted, they’ll appear under DNA tests shared with you.
- Click Save to update your comparison.
You’ll see the regions, journeys, or traits they’ve chosen to share, which could include all their results, only the regions and journeys you have in common, or the traits they can access.

Removing someone
Removing someone stops only the DNA comparison; it won’t change their match status. If they’re a match, they’ll still be listed as a match. If they’ve shared their DNA results with you, they'll remain shared. You can add them back to the DNA comparison at any time.
From a browser:
- On the DNA compare page, click the three horizontal dots next to someone you want to remove.
- Then, click Remove.
From the app
- From the Traits Compare page, select Add or remove.

Frequently asked questions
Select a question below to view the answer. Select the question again to hide it.
Why is someone missing ancestral regions, journeys, or traits?
You can only view what someone has chosen to share and what they can access. If someone’s regions, journeys, or traits are missing, it could be because they’ve opted not to share them or they don’t have access to them.
- For ancestral origins (regions and journeys), they may only be sharing the ones you have in common.
- For traits, they may not have access to the traits sold with kits, available with an upgrade (where available), or included with membership.
Why don’t some people’s regions add up to 100%?
AncestryDNA members can choose whether to share all their regions or only their regions in common. If someone’s regions don’t add up to 100%, you’re likely only seeing the regions you have in common.
Why do I have different ancestral origins and traits than my siblings?
Every person inherits a unique mix of DNA, so your results won’t match your siblings’ exactly. Even full siblings (unless identical twins) share only about half of their DNA, which is why their results usually differ.
Learn more about how DNA is passed down and inherited.
What makes someone appear in my side panel?
People appear in the DNA compare side panel when they’re your DNA match or if they’ve shared their DNA test with you.
What if I can’t find someone?
If you're having trouble, try:
- Searching by name or test manager – Click + Add someone, then enter their name or username in the search bar at the top of the opened panel. If someone else manages their test, search for the manager’s name or username instead.
- Requesting access – Still can't find them? Ask them to share their DNA test with you. Once you accept their invitation, they’ll appear under DNA tests shared with you, allowing you to select them.
Do I need to be related to someone to compare our DNA?
No, you don't need to be related. You can compare DNA with anyone who has AncestryDNA results, matches turned on, and allows DNA comparisons. To compare with someone who isn’t a match, ask them to share their DNA test with you.
Can I compare ancestral origins in the Ancestry® app?
No. Right now, only traits can be compared in the Ancestry app. To compare your ancestral origins (regions and journeys), use the Ancestry website.
