If you're missing a whole family tree, see Missing Family Trees. If you added someone to your tree and they disappeared, you may have a duplicate person. See Merging Duplicate People. If you're missing a branch of your tree, follow the steps below. 

Switch between horizontal and vertical tree views

First, try switching the orientation of your tree.

In the toolbar to the left of your family tree, click the View button and switch between the Horizontal and Vertical views. If that fixes it, you're done. If that doesn't fix it, continue reading.

Why part of your tree disappeared

When you delete or disconnect someone from your tree, like a grandparent, their parents and children might disappear from view. This happens because the person you removed was the only link to the rest of the tree. For example, if you remove your grandfather from your tree, all his ancestors would disappear, too, because there's no way to show their relationship to you without him.

But don't worry! Unless you've manually deleted each missing person, they're still in your tree, and you can bring them back. Just reconnect them and their relationships to have them reappear.

Restoring the missing branch

1. Find the person in your tree who's closest to the missing branch.
2. Look to see if they have a "Potential" parent listed.
   • If there is a potential parent, click on the potential parent and choose Review Details. If it’s the right person, click Yes.
   • If there isn't a potential parent, go to the next step. 
3. If their parent is listed as Add mother/father or they're a child of someone in your tree and not a parent, click the Find in tree button in your tree's toolbar on the left.
4. In the opened side panel, either:
   • Enter the missing person's name and select them when their name appears.
   • Or, if you don't know their name, click on List of all people and look for someone who could be the missing person.
     • Look at people with the same last name as the child.
     • Look for people whose birth dates are estimated to be about 20-30 years before the child's birth. 
5. Click on the missing person in your tree and click on Profile in the opened card.
6. In the Relationships column of their profile page, click + Add and choose the person you want to connect to them (for example, to connect a daughter, choose Daughter).
7. In the top-left corner of the opened window, click Choose someone from your tree.
8. Start entering the name of the person you want to connect and select them when their name appears.
9. Click Save.
